Taylor Bros is an industry-leading engineering company, providing project management, design, fabrication, electrical and mechanical services to the defence, offshore oil and gas and general marine industries, across Australia and internationally.
Project management services
Taylor Bros has extensive experience in project management, providing capabilities in the management of scope, specification and change through contract and configuration management, directing and monitoring of project execution through finance, scheduling, earned value management and risk management, and ensuring verification and validation of the specification through quality assurance and testing.
In order to ensure that control over processes is maintained and that customer needs and expectations are met, Taylor Bros have designed, implemented and maintain a formalised management system that complies with the requirements of the AS/NZS ISO9001:2008 standard for quality management systems.
Engineering naval architecture design
Taylor Bros provides engineering, naval architecture and detailed design capabilities. The engineering group includes a naval architect, mechanical engineer, systems engineer and design drafters. Their expertise includes naval architecture, structural and marine engineering, outfit architecture and detailed production design.
The design drafters have been drawn from trade employees giving them extensive experience in production and production design. Management of the design and product configuration is maintained through a core system that forms part of the BMS, which is tailored for use on specific projects.
Offshore accommodation outfitting
Taylor Bros uses class-certified equipment and materials in all outfit accommodation projects. This is especially important in the oil and gas industry where certification of the design and supplies is closely monitored by classification societies. Taylor Bros has the ability to advise customers of new materials, techniques and systems that meet classification requirements while providing ease of production and a reduction in cost and installation times. Taylor Bros is the Australian agents for Staco, the Korean marine outfitting manufacturer. This relationship with Staco gives Taylor Bros access to the Korean shipbuilding supply chain.
During the past five years, Taylor Bros has concentrated on developing a more efficient manner in which to prefabricate accommodation spaces and modules for maritime installations. By maximising completion through detailed design including pre-coring the wall units to allow for the installation of water and electrical services within the insulated wall units and preconstruction with furniture complete we have been able to significantly improve the efficiency of installation.
We have developed systems of work to allow preparation of interior areas away from the ship yard to reduce labour at the installation. Our experience with manufacturing furniture from strong lightweight hexcore panels has enabled the overall weight of furniture design to be substantially reduced and conform to SOLAS while having a high level of finish.
Facilities, industrial workshops and highly-trained personnel
Taylor Bros' facility, located on the Derwent River waterfront in Derwent Park, Tasmania, comprises three conjoined industrial workshops, ancillary offices and storage and a separate storage shed. The 933m³ Eastern workshop comprises a high-clearance steel portal frame workshop with a clearance of 8.5m at the sides to 12.5m at the centre.
Taylor Bros specialises in dockside refits for the Southern Ocean and Antarctic research fleet of vessels. A team of diesel mechanics and fitters carry out engine and gearbox rebuilds, engine room refitting and maintenance. Welding services including coded welders qualified for Lloyds, DNV and ABS weld procedures have the ability to carry out tank repairs and structural modifications to class standards.
Taylor Bros develops staff qualifications, competencies and capabilities through cross trade development, providing a constant increase in capability and the ability to perform as a best practice organisation.
Naval accommodation outfitting projects
Taylor Bros has been awarded extensive outfit accommodation contracts with the RNZN via Tenix/BAE for the Project Protector fleet, the AWD Frigates via ASC shipyard in Adelaide and the Spanish built LHD's through BAE in Williamstown, Victoria. These contract s includes configuration management, records keeping and updating facilities, along with a help desk facility should the ships require assistance.
These contacts also include anything from engineering support to establishing ongoing life support and maintenance programs. Taylor Bros has established software data packages for maintaining records for future modification and maintenance of ships interiors and equipment.
Offshore accommodation and office modules
In 2012, Taylor Bros built two accommodation and office modules that have been added to the Stena Clyde as additional accommodation, allowing their valuable POB numbers to increase to 108. This included the installation of the supporting structures onboard, and the relocation of an existing module to the opposite side of the rig some 20m beyond the reach of the cranes. This is additional to one office and two accommodation modules installed in 2010. In late 2012 a 13.5m x 4m module was manufactured for Stena in the North Sea. Taylor Bros carries out detailed design submissions to DNV f or these projects.
The majority of Taylor Bros employees hold current BOSIET certification and regularly travel to offshore facilities around the Australian Coast to carry out design work, maintenance, modifications and outfitting work. This extends project management during dry dockings at all locations including Singapore.
Fleet modifications: passenger ferries
Taylor Bros has carried out major modification and maintenance projects to both Australian and New Zealand passenger ferries. Projects include the conversion of the Spirit of Tasmania's eight outdoor areas into an indoor 146 seat business class passenger lounge with male, female and handicapped toilets whilst the ships were in service, and increasing the car carrying capacity of both ships by approximately 15% with the installation of hydraulic hanging decks. Both ships were modified at the same time without missing one sailing.
Major modifications to the New Zealand ferry Artahura included the refurbishment of all passenger public areas on two decks, within a short two-month period.
