Fleximark in Sweden Bridges Two Nations

15 October 2004

Fleximark® cable marking systems have been used to identify all electrical cables on a road/rail link between Malmö and Copenhagen. The Öresund Bridge spans the stretch of water between Sweden and Denmark and is the largest infrastructure project in Scandinavian history. Fleximark®, part of the Lapp Group, was appointed one of the official suppliers, winning an order for cable markers valued in excess of 1 million Swedish Crowns (£70,000).

Being able to identify the thousands of different cables involved in a massive engineering feat like the Öresund Bridge is vital to ensure maintenance and repairs can be completed easily, and more importantly, safely. As an essentially offshore project, customised stainless steel markers from the Fleximark® range were specified for a wide range of cabling including signalling, lighting and high voltage power cables. In addition, the Flexipart® system was used to provide long-lasting colour-coded polyester labels for electrical wires.

Fleximark® cable markers were supplied on a call-off basis throughout the four-year construction period. Data for each marker was received in both digital format and hard copy via fax. Orders were then processed, sorted for easy handling and despatched with any relevant reference information in an average turnaround time of one or two days. The contract also included cabling for railway connections on the Swedish side of the bridge.

Ideal for outdoor use or harsh industrial conditions, Fleximark® Stainless offers a rust-proof, chemical and fire resistant labelling solution which is unaffected by heat, cold, corrosion, acids or chemicals. Also, being low-smoke and halogen-free, they have become one of the main stainless steel marking products used by the offshore oil and gas industry in the North Sea. Fleximark® Stainless markers are manufactured from SS-2348 steel (AISI 316) with embossed text. The markers are designed to be attached to flat surfaces with rivets or screws using the holes provided, or fixed securely to cables or other round objects, such as pipes or hoses, with cable ties.

Flexipart labels are supplied on halogen free polyester card in a choice of five colours, with up to 60 labels per card. Any combination of letters, numbers and certain electrical symbols can be requested and these are etched in black below the surface of the labels using a special inkjet printer, making them highly resistant to damage.

Fleximark® is available in a range of systems for marking all types of cables, components and equipment across a wide range of industries. They can be supplied ready-made, or depending on the system, relevant characters can simply be snapped off pre-punched strips and inserted in the holder supplied.
