Bury-based international safety-seal giant Roxtec has signed a major deal to supply the world’s largest offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

Swedish-owned Roxtec will supply a range of cable seals to the Greater Gabbard wind farm off the Suffolk coast currently being developed by Scottish and Southern Energy and RWE npower renewables.

Construction is under way and the project is due for completion in 2012.

Roxtec's UK managing director, Graham O'Hare, said its cable transit seals are being used in all 140 of the 3.6MW wind turbines which will power around 530,000 homes.

"This is an absolutely terrific contract for Roxtec to land," he said. "The highly specialised nature of the contract means we have had to design bespoke cable transit seals able to withstand the harsh offshore environment. The deal really showcases the very best of Roxtec's problem-solving design mentality. In total ten different applications are being used on the project, specifically sealing the cabling within the wind turbines from fire, water and blast."

Mr O’Hare said Roxtec has extensive experience in the wind industry having been used in almost every offshore wind farm in Europe. "The cable transit seals will be sealing cables and used as part of the retention system areas," he said. "We have produced seals for the generator system, the switch room, the converter, the tower, the nacelle, the transition pieces and the control cabinets."

Roxtec will be exhibiting at the British Wind Energy Association conference in Liverpool between November 20 and 22.
