A very successful forum was held on Tuesday 27 September by ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions, the first Greek manufacturer to have designed, certified and manufactured an integrated ballast water management system.
More than 250 people including executives from the largest Greek shipping companies attended the forum, thus supporting a major effort made by a Greek company. ERMA FIRST, comprised of young scientists, managed to create a high-standard ballast water treatment system.
During the forum the regulations of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the Ballast Water and Sediment Control Convention 2004 was presented and analysed while attendants were thoroughly informed about the latest developments in the legislative context, testing and sampling board, issues of great concern for the shipping and managing companies. Participants had the chance to understand the particular features of ERMA FIRST as a distinguished solution on board.
Distinguished presenters such as Dr. Stephan Gollash, a reputable, academically recognised marine biologist worldwide and pioneer in the domain of sampling on-board and shipboard testing, analysed the procedure of sampling and the future challenges related to the regulation implementation and on-board surveying / sampling by authorities and coast guards.
Mr. Frank Fuhr, a distinguished marine biologist and senior researcher of the reputable Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), presented the procedures and conditions / requirements of land-based tests, as dictated by IMO.
ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions, being the first Greek company that designed, certified and produced a system for treating marine ballast water, uses advanced technology electrolysis of seawater to produce active substances combined with high-performance mechanical separation of particles through state-of-the-art hydrocyclones that ensure full compliance both for IMO D-2 but also for even more stringent limits.
Similar efforts by Greek companies such as ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions deserve strong attention not only from Greeks but also from the entire maritime community.
