Marioff - High Pressure Water Mist Fire Protection Systems

HI-FOG is a water mist fire protection technology which is fast, efficient, and totally safe for people and the environment. Developed by Marioff, a Finnish company with a background in marine and offshore high pressure hydraulics, HI-FOG makes use of the attributes of the only truly environmentally benign agent – water. HI-FOG has therefore become the first choice for many marine and land-based applications around the world.

HI-FOG is particularly suitable for use on offshore oil & gas installations where fire protection systems must be efficient, reliable and safe for people. Unlike gaseous total flooding systems, HI-FOG does not require a sealed space to be effective, and can be activated even if personnel are still in the space. Because the amount of water used is so small, water damage is minimal. And systems are easily tested and require little maintenance.

  • Superior Fire Suppression - More than 4000 full scale fire tests have proved the superior fire extinguishing and efficient cooling of HI-FOG - but with very small amounts of water
  • Smoke Absorption Capability - Smoke is often more dangerous than the fire itself - HI-FOG scrubs and absorbs dangerous smoke particles providing superior protection to low pressure water spray systems
  • Minimal Water Damage - Low flow and stainless steel tubing mean minimal water damage and clean-up in case of accidental discharge or fire
  • Cost-effective Installation - Because of smaller pipe sizes 12-38mm (1/2-1.1/2") and wide nozzle spacing, installation and commissioning time for HI-FOG systems is considerably less than low pressure water systems
  • Easy Testing - Because HI-FOG uses only small amounts of water, system operation is easily checked and can be carried out as part of a regular testing and maintenance programme

HI-FOG INSTALLATIONS

Marioff recently shipped HI-FOG systems to two of the world’s largest Oil & Gas Companies for protection of special hazard areas previously protected by Halon. Over twenty units, destined for installations in the North Sea, were fully Eexd-rated and supplied in stainless steel enclosures designed to meet the highest ‘offshore’ standards.

Systems are protecting a variety of risks including:

  • Diesel generator & other machinery spaces
  • Pump rooms
  • Transformer rooms
  • Control rooms
  • Accommodation spaces

HI-FOG MACHINERY SPACE SYSTEMS

The HI-FOG Machinery Space System replaces a gaseous fire extinguishing system and is approved by Factory Mutual and all major Marine Authorities and Classification Societies. The system utilises stand-alone MAU accumulator units or the HI-FOG sprinkler pump unit and is activated automatically or manually in sections, so the pipework from the section valve is dry. ‘Offshore’ versions can be supplied with Eexd-rated solenoid valves, pressure switches heaters, specially lined water cylinders and stainless steel or specially painted enclosures.

HI-FOG LOCAL APPLICATION SYSTEMS

Marioff has approved HI-FOG Local Application systems which can be fitted in addition to a gaseous total flooding system. The systems can be fitted over any high risk or high value equipment.

HI-FOG SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

The HI-FOG Sprinkler System is an alternative to conventional sprinkler systems, and is suitable for protection of accommodation and similar spaces. It comprises a number of HI-FOG sprinklers connected by fresh water filled stainless steel small bore tubing to a pump unit via section valves. The pump unit is normally electrically driven, but alternatively a diesel-driven pump unit or Marioff’s innovative and economical GPU (gas pump unit) can be supplied.
