Bergesen d.y. ASA, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, has chosen UK engineering company Peter Brotherhood Ltd to supply a steam turbine for a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel moored off the coast of Nigeria.
Bergesen d.y. ASA is a leading international supplier of maritime transportation services and tanker-based offshore solutions. The company transports energy products all over the world and has a growing presence with FPSOs for benign waters off West Africa.
Peter Brotherhood will design, manufacture and install a 7MW turbo alternator set for the 'Sendje Berge' FPSO vessel. The set will consist of a turbine, gearbox and alternator, all mounted on a common bedplate which incorporates the oil system. The turbine will accept steam from gas fired boilers on the vessel and will exhaust to the ship's existing condenser.
The steam turbine, gearbox and oil system will be tested on steam at Peter Brotherhood's manufacturing facility and will be delivered in August (2004). Engineers from the company will then commission the machine on board the vessel.
Bergesen d.y. ASA chose Peter Brotherhood because of the company’s extensive experience in manufacturing steam turbine alternator sets for installation on FPSOs. These sets have to incorporate features to enable them to operate reliably in a floating environment, where they can be affected by, for example, the pitch and roll of a ship.
Peter Brotherhood's managing director, Stephen Fitzpatrick, said: 'Winning this order has strengthened Peter Brotherhood's position as a world-class supplier of steam turbines for FPSOs. The combination of Peter Brotherhood technologies and FPSO experience provide an exclusive and superior solution for our customers.'
Peter Brotherhood has been designing and manufacturing steam turbine driven alternator sets for FPSOs since 1981, having installed turbines moored off the coast of Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and the North Sea.
