Peter Brotherhood's world leading expertise in the design and manufacture of power generation systems for use on floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facilities has led to the company securing a £3.7 million contract to supply two condensing turbo alternator sets to IHC Gusto Engineering B.V.

The Peterborough, UK-based company has extensive experience in supplying these systems, which have to incorporate special features to enable them to operate reliably in a floating environment where they can be affected by, for example, the pitch and roll of a ship.

The geographic location in which systems will be installed and the harshness of sea conditions that could be encountered are also considerations during the design process.

Schiedam-based IHC Gusto Engineering, which provides design, engineering and consultancy services for the offshore oil industries, is purchasing the system as part of a larger project for its parent company Single Buoy Moorings Inc.

The two turbo alternator sets will each generate 12MW of power from steam raised by a central boiler. They will be built to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards and installed at a Single Buoy Mooring Inc. operation in South America.

Peter Brotherhood won the order because of its capability in designing and supplying systems for use on FPSOs. In 1981 it supplied two turbines to the worlds first FPSO, the Shell Medora, which was moored in the Fulmar Field in the North Sea. The company now has systems installed on a number of FPSOs world-wide.
