Strategic Marine Pty Ltd has been awarded a US$60 million contract to build the floating dock, for the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson, Western Australia with delivery scheduled for mid 2009.

The 99m long by 53m wide structure will be capable of providing the land transfer of docked vessels up to 3,500 tonnes, with the capacity to lift 12,000 tonne vessels out of the water for service and maintenance work. Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the floating dock was expected to inject well over US$2 billion into the State's economy over the next 25 years.

The sidewalls of the dock containing the control systems and running machinery will be constructed in Western Australia while the base pontoon will be constructed at Strategic Marine's facility in Vietnam and transported to Henderson for consolidation with the side walls. Over 1,000 tonnes of steel work is scheduled to be completed in Western Australia, as well as the integration of all machinery, electronics and ballasting systems. The local content of the project will be over 60%.

Strategic Marine is riding a huge wave of success, with 124 vessels on the order books, equating to over US$245 million. Of particular interest is the new build contract for a 143m Dive Support Vessel for Coastline Maritime Pte Ltd of Singapore. This project has enabled Strategic Marine's Vietnam facility to develop the infrastructure and technology to complete large steel construction projects such as the AMC floating dock.

"The AMC project would have to rate as one of the more impressive government contracts in Strategic Marine's history", stated Mark Newbold (Chairman). Strategic Marine are certainly no stranger to large government contracts, having delivered over 140 patrol vessels to various government agencies around the world, totalling over $180 million.

The floating dock project is a key component of the Government's US$174.3 million commitment to infrastructure upgrades at the AMC, and will be a valuable addition to Western Australia's ship building precinct.
