Rexroth Piles Fundaments for World's Longest Bridge

31 July 2003 12:30

Again Rexroth, partner in numerous record projects, is in the race for a maximum. Lately the assignment for the production of the biggest hydraulic cylinder ever used in piling barge applications was landed. The assignment contains 3 cylinders with stroke lenghts of 11,5 and 13 meters, a diameter of resp. 900 and 1000 mm and a weight of approx. 60 tonnes per cylinder.

With these cylinders the foundation will be layed for the Hangzhou Bay’s Cross-Sea Bridge, the longest bridge in the world. This record braking bridge, with a lenght of 36 kilometers, makes the swift connection to northern Shanghai possible. Therefore its an important katalisor to the strong growing economy in the Zhejiang province.

The in-house knowledge and experience was one of the braking points to choose for Rexroth. In 1986 the specialists from The Netherlands delivered a similar hydraulic system and although this was a little smaller the status of “proven in practice” was well deserved.

The specific job of this hydraulic cylinders is the positioning of the ram stage to the vertical operating mode. The extraordinary long steel piles of 85 and 95 meter are then piled into the sea-bottom. The hydraulic system also provides the stabilisation during this proces which sometimes takes days.

The delivery of the floting ram islands is planned for the end of 2003, the delivery of the total project will be in 2010.
