JD Instruments - Real Time Drilling Fluid Viscosity Measurement

As drilling fluid costs continue to rise and drilling becomes more challenging the importance of properly monitoring drilling fluid becomes paramount. RTM and JD Instruments have developed a system that offers fast, accurate fluid viscosity measurement. This system combines proven viscosity measurement techniques with advanced software control that allow operators to view, monitor and record data.

DRILLING FLUID MEASUREMENT

In the past drilling fluid was measured using a funnel and a stopwatch, and in some cases that is still the case today. Unfortunately this technique introduces several opportunities for human error not to mention the labor and time required to adequately monitor the fluid viscosity.

The lab model viscometers are not much better since they are not only time consuming and labor intensive but they also must be operated by trained personnel. Operators will be able to spend less time testing the fluid viscosity and will get more reliable data.

INDUSTRY STANDARD VISCOSITY MEASUREMENT

Over the last six years RTM and JD Instruments, Inc. have worked to develop a system that could be easily installed, require minimal maintenance, and offer fast, accurate industry standard viscosity measurement. The new system by RTM combines proven viscosity measurement techniques with advanced software control that allow operators to view, monitor and record data.

In addition to measuring viscosity and displaying the Centipoises (CPS) values, the system also calculates Yield Point (YP) and Plastic Viscosity (PV) using industry standard formulas. By utilizing a precisely controlled stepper motor and proprietary software the system measures, calculates, and displays CPS values at each of four preset speeds. Each speed provides industry specific shear rates that track lab viscosity data.

REALTIME VISCOSITY SYSTEM

The carrying capacity of drilling fluid described by the YP can help mud-engineers in determining when to add certain viscosifiers to the drilling fluid. Having this information available continuously from the real-time viscosity system will allow a faster reaction to changes in the YP than has been possible in the past.

If the cuttings are not removed from the bit and the wellbore a variety of problems can arise. The new viscosity system can help operators, owners, and mud-engineers monitor and control the fluid viscosity with real-time data that has never before been available.

LOW TURBULENCE VISCOMETER

Whether your fluid is oil-based, water-based or synthetic, the RTM system with its stainless steel construction can be used without the need for any other enclosures. In addition it has proven reliable in both the inflow and outflow mud-tanks. The viscometer works equally well in turbulent or calm conditions and assistance with installation is included with low day-rate costs.

The RTM system is available to start saving your fluid today. Available in NEMA 4X and NEMA VII enclosures. Flexibility in speed ranges can customize the system to fit your individual requirements.
