Rapp Hydema - Electric and Hydraulic Winches, Winch Control Systems, Powering Systems and After-Market Service

For over 100 years, Rapp Hydema has manufactured and supplied deck machinery to the oil and gas, research / survey, workboat and fishing industries. Our comprehensive product range, customized to fully meet client requirements, encompasses hydraulic and electric winches for anchor-mooring, towing, heavy-lift and ROV operations, and a variety of fishing and research vessel applications. Unusual for a winch manufacturer, Rapp also manufactures its own gearbox drives, and has a history of close involvement in design and manufacture of other powering for its winches.

From first contact, through detailed engineering design to production, final testing and backed up by a dedicated service and maintenance network worldwide, Rapp Hydema is your natural partner for deck machinery.

We recently implemented and maintain a quality management system, which fulfills the requirements of ISO 9001:2008. The certificate covers the following field of activities: provision of special-purpose winch systems for operation and storage of electro-mechanical cable and lifting wire, by the oil and gas, research / survey, fishing and workboat industries.

Hydraulic and electric oceanographic research winches

Hydraulic and electric oceanographic research winches are tailored for optimal performance and customized for specific requirements. Our range includes:

  • CTD winches
  • Hydrographic winches
  • Traction winch system
  • Oceanographic winches
  • Corer and deep-sea winches
  • Pentagon control system including Active Heave Compensation

Deepwater heavy-lift winches

We offer deepwater heavy-lift winches with superior performance, specially designed for subsea abandonment, recovery and installation operations (as delivered to Gulf of Mexico), for underwater engineering and construction industries. These are an efficient and economic solution for your next offshore heavy-lift or ROV job, saving you valuable time and money.

ROV handling systems and winch drive conversions

Our ROV handling systems are specially designed and developed for use with a range of remotely-operated underwater vehicles with computerized Active Heave Compensation control systems.

Anchor and mooring winches

We offer anchor and mooring winches designed with the shipping industry in mind, for handling anchor chains up to 105mm grade U2. The winches are built according to ISO standards and meet the requirements of the world's leading classifications societies.

The hydraulic system, based on medium-pressure winches, provides added flexibility in arranging the deck layout. We also provide mooring winch systems specially designed for 6-12 point mooring operations in 24/7 duty with hydraulic or electric drives.

Traction winch systems

Rapp traction winch systems are designed for heavy-lift and deepwater operations. They have optional Active Heave Compensation and available lifting capacities up to 450t. The winch systems can have hydraulic or electric drives.

Among many satisfied customers, Rapp will be providing its latest traction winches for the University of Alaska's Regional Research Vessel, as well as NOAA's sixth FRV-40 class research vessel, in 2011.

Hydraulic and electric winch drive units

More than 2,000 Rapp Hydema winch drive units are installed worldwide. Standard features include:

  • Developed specifically for the most extreme, continuous-use offshore operations - as in the Bering and North seas
  • Rugged, compact and space-saving design - added survivability for motors owing to gear reduction
  • Extended service life from experienced engineering
  • High starting torque
  • Two-speed option
  • Shot blast zinc metallized
  • Increased durability and reduced maintenance costs

Drive units were first developed for Rapp's own winches, however installations then followed on other deck machinery, including cranes. The drives proved so successful that they spread to other applications, sometimes far removed from winches, including bow thrusters, conveyors and even jacked rigs. Regarding the latter, Rapp has ABS Type Approval for its 1400OBB unit - the only hydraulic gearbox with ABS Type Approval for Baker jackups.

Winch control systems

Rapp Hydema's winch control system PTS Pentagon is the latest and most up-to-date programmable trawl winch control system on the market. The system contains all the features required for safe winch operation. The layout, design and integrated service functions have evolved over the course of 30 years' experience in a wide array of deepwater marine applications. Since the first autotension features were developed, many new functions and options are now available.

Rapp's latest and most advanced computerized system, including our 'Soft Touch' drive controls together with our Active Heave Compensation (AHC) system, offers significantly improved vehicle and cable handling characteristics.

Features of the PTS Pentagon:

  • Integrates with echo sounder and trawl instrumentation
  • Enhanced user friendliness
  • Uses up to four winches, simultaneously, for all types of trawling
  • High-quality display gives overall view of trawl performance
  • Safe and trouble-free operation by high-grade marine quality PLC and state-of-the-art PC
  • Layout, design and functions are based on decades of experience with our PTS 3000 and ICS 40 systems already installed on more than 250 vessels worldwide
