BP’s Nam Con Son Pipeline Project (NCSP) is a high-availability wet gas development supplying fuel to consumers in the southern parts of Vietnam. NCSP is a very challenging multiphase pipeline to operate because it is the longest pipeline of its kind, further compounding the management of its gas and liquids production.
The 370-km, 26-inch pipeline transports the gas/condensate mixture from the offshore platform to the onshore landfall and extends through to the entrance of the slug catcher at the NCSP terminal at Dinh Co, and on to the final sales gas delivery point at Phu My. The client’s initial development plans called for the NCSP to transport gas and associated liquids solely from offshore fields, with provisions for future tie-ins of additional offshore fields.
Since its initial operations, BP Vietnam has been managing this challenging gathering and transmission operations using its new Virtual Pipeline Manager™ (VPM) package. Multiphase Solutions, Inc. (MSi) of Houston, TX completed the supply of another one of its world-class, real-time Virtual Pipeline Manager™ systems earlier, for the real-time, on-line management and optimization of the NCSP operations.
The NCSP VPM ensures day-to-day supply deliverability to the end users without sacrificing operational viability. VPM provides critical supply management functions because NCSP gas is used for power generation, accounting for a significant portion of Vietnam’s current as well as future energy demands. NCSP operators utilize their on-line VPM package to maintain the operational integrity and it provides them with alarms and recommendations regarding a number of issues, including liquid slugging during transients and pigging events, gas deliverability and starvation.
Their comprehensive VPM package provides real-time, on-line monitoring, advisory and optimization functions, with look-ahead and “what-if” forecasting functionalities. The VPM interfaces with an ABB Advant Data Historian, to retrieve DCS information about the pipeline and related facilities, via appropriate communications protocol. VPM’s field-proven robustness, speed and accuracy of data analysis and recommendation functionalities are critical to NCSP because of the necessity to make timely and informed decisions during their day-to-day operations.
In addition, NCSP personnel also utilize a user-friendly, offline VPM/FDG™ Operator Trainer System (OTS) and Engineering Simulation system, providing them with a rigorous, fully-integrated environment for operations training and off-line planning and analysis.
