Recommendations for Improving Offshore Safety

20 December 2011

This whitepaper, published by the National Ocean Industries Association, has been drafted by a joint industry task force to address offshore operating procedures and equipment in response to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) oil spill.

The main objective of the report is to provide recommendations to the US Department of the Interior Outer Continental Shelf Safety Oversight Board on critical areas of GOM offshore activity.

At the time of the paper's release, nearly 35,000 workers and 90 rigs were active in Gulf of Mexico federal waters, with nearly 978 out of 3,500 production platforms manned.

The industry experts tried to identify best practices in offshore drilling operations and equipment, with the ultimate goal of enhancing safety and environmental protection.
