The US Government lifted a ban on British oil firm BP that blocked it from bidding for government contracts, after it agreed to a set of safety, operations and compliance requirements.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and BP reached a five-year agreement, ending the prohibition on bidding for federal contracts on everything from fuel supply contracts to offshore leases.

Under the terms and conditions of the agreement, BP agreed to a set of safety and operations, ethics and compliance, and corporate governance requirements.

DECC recommends NCIMB’s toxicity tests

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) approved Aberdeen-based microbiology and chemical analysis company NCIMB’s toxicity tests as the preferred method of offshore discharge testing to reduce marine environment risk.

DECC recommended the MARA and LumiMARA bioassays as part of the UK’s implementation of a risk based approach (RBA) to testing of produced water discharges from offshore installations.

Said to include an array of carefully selected microorganisms, the bioassays have been recommended in preference to single species microbial testing.

BOEM reveals final environmental study for oil and gas exploration in Atlantic Ocean

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) revealed a final environmental review of geological and geophysical (G&G) survey activities on the effects of geological and geophysical activities to explore energy resources along the Atlantic seaboard.

The review establishes multiple mitigation measures that have been designed to cut down the impacts to marine life.

BOEM’s review also sets a path for survey activities that are set to update nearly four-decade-old data on offshore energy resources in the region.

In the programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS), the agency identifies the protective mitigation measures, as well as the safeguards to reduce or eliminate impacts to marine life.

Ukraine’s offshore natural gas reserves development to hang in limbo

The large natural gas reserves development offshore Ukraine could hang in limbo after the Crimea peninsula returned to Russia’s rule, according to Platts.

Platts’ article focuses on the Ukraine crisis, as well as its implications for natural gas prices and European energy trade flows.

Platts explores how the Crimea returning to Russia has upended Ukraine’s hopes of becoming a natural gas exporter in the near future, and its Black Sea offshore reserves are now owned by Russia.

North Sea helicopter crash might have been prevented, inquiry reveals

A fatal accident inquiry found that the North Sea helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of 14 oil workers and two crew, might have been prevented.

The crash involved a Eurocopter AS332L2 Super Puma Mk 2 belonging to Bond Offshore Helicopters.

Relatives of oil workers and pilots who died when the Bond-operated Super Puma suffered a catastrophic gearbox failure have called for a criminal inquiry, but the Crown Office defended its decision not to prosecute.
