The Marine Well Containment Company has unveiled a new well containment system to offer rapid containment response capabilities should an underwater oil spill occur in the Gulf of Mexico.
The system includes a subsea capping stack to shut oil flow or to flow the oil through flexible pipes and risers to surface vessels.
The response system also features subsea dispersant injection equipment, manifolds and capture vessels to provide surface processing and storage.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement was consulted to ensure the system is designed to meet the US Government's requirements.
ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Shell are partnering on the project and will develop additional system components to expand the initial system's capabilities.
The system is due to for completion in 2012.
