Nigerian Oil Exports Continue Despite General Strike

21 June 2007 12:25

Nigeria's second day of general strike has not disrupted the country's oil exports, governments officials have confirmed.

Oil unions had threatened to withdraw key staff from the terminals and exert more pressure on the government to reverse an increase in fuel prices.

But the general strike which has so far brought the country's major economic activities to a standstill has not stopped oil exports from leaving the country.

Nigeria's four oil refineries have been shut for months due to sabotage and mismanagement, leaving Africa's largest producer of crude entirely dependent on imports to meet its fuel needs.

The Nigerian government raised fuel price to 75 naira a litre due to rising world prices.
