02 August 2007 15:42

Mexico's state oil company, Pemex, has contracted three semi-submersible drilling rigs for deepwater activity.

Two of the rigs, which come into operation in 2010, will have depths of 2100m, while the third will reach 3000m.

CEO of Pemex subsidiary, PEP, Carlos Morales Gil told news agency Business News Americas that the company is also in the process of contracting an additional rig that will begin operation in 2008, to depths of 2000m.

In the second quarter of this year Pemex drilled 169 wells, down 6% from the same period last year, and only 12 were exploratory.
