Exxon Slams Gore Allegations09 August 2007 10:36 Global oil giant ExxonMobil has slammed ex-US Vice President Al Gore's claims it is misinforming the world on climate change, calling his ideas a 'discredited conspiracy theory'. The company hit back at Al Gore after he accused ExxonMobil and other large energy companies of being part of $10m 'public misinformation' campaign designed to make the public believe there is disagreement among scientists about global warming. "The allegation that ExxonMobil supported groups to denounce climate change science is completely false," an ExxonMobil spokesperson told offshore-technology.com. "The recycling of this type of discredited conspiracy theory diverts attention from the real challenge at hand: how to provide the energy needed to improve global living standards while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions." "ExxonMobil is taking action – reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations, supporting research into technology breakthroughs and participating in policy debates with NGO's (non-government organisations)." It is not the first time ExxonMobil has come under such high-profile criticism. Last year, British and American science advocacy groups accused the oil giant of funding bodies that undermine the scientific consensus on climate change. ExxonMobil hit back at these allegations, calling them an attempt to smear its name. Reported by Ozge Ibrahim » Email this link to a friend |
