Total and Chevron have announced a new crude oil discovery in a well in the Lower Congo Basin in Angola.

Total and Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (a subsidiary of joint venture partner Chevron) uncovered a 65m oil reservoir after drilling Malange-1 to a total vertical depth of 4,743m.

Following testing the well has produced 'high quality crude' at a rate of 7,669 barrels of oil per day.

Further drilling and geologic and engineering studies to appraise the field will follow.

Malange-1 is the 11th exploration discovery made in Block 14 since 1997.

Cabinda Gulf Oil Company holds a 31% interest in Block 14 while Total owns 20%.
