Oil and Gas Giants Team Up to Develop New Technology

13 August 2007 11:12

The world's largest oil company, Saudi Aramco, has teamed up with oil and gas technology giant Schlumberger to develop new borehole gravity metering (BHGM) technology measuring the movement of deep-reservoir fluids.

"The high precision, slim-hole BHGM logging tool with associated sensors will acquire gravity density measurements through 4-1/2” outer diameter tubing, without having to pull out the tubing strings, as is the case with current technology", says manager of Saudi Aramco's EXPEC Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) Muhammad Saggaf.

However, the measurements will require the development of inversion software to estimate reservoir fluid saturations and make accurate interpretation possible deep into the reservoir.

"We anticipate this technology will add value to current formation evaluation practices and help obtain deep formation density data," says Schlumberger's technology team.

The development project will be carried out by a technical team from Saudi Aramco's EXPEC ARC and Schlumberger.
