Police Seize Smuggled Fuel in Gulf

30 August 2007 16:51

Iranian police have seized a ship carrying 500,000 litres of smuggled gas oil in the Gulf, detaining 18 people on board.

The ship was bound for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Its crew were from Iraq, Indonesia and the Philippines, say Reuters.

Iran has some of the cheapest fuel in the world, which analysts believe encourages smuggling to other countries where prices are higher.

Iran is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, but lacks refining capacity.
