Exxon Calls for Technological Breakthroughs on Climate Change05 September 2007 15:38 Stabilising CO2 levels and delivering significant changes in energy efficiency will require "more dramatic technological breakthroughs", according to the Chairman of US based oil and gas giant ExxonMobil. Delivering this year's keynote speech at Aberdeen's Offshore Europe event, Robert Olson addressed the need for innovation in one of the most contentious issues affecting the offshore industry – climate change. He said that climate change is very significant to the future of the industry and that his company has been "quick to seek improvements in energy efficiency in its own operations." Describing how ExxonMobil is taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions today, he stated that the company is supporting breakthrough technological research to help "reduce the 'gap' tomorrow." Steps taken by ExxonMobil to improve energy efficiency include new cogeneration and chemical plants and plans to assess the viability of geological carbon storage.
