06 December 2007 12:04

BP has announced start-up of the world's deepest subsea multi-phase pump project in the Gulf of Mexico, to increase oil recovery from deepwater fields.

The company has installed two subsea pumps at the King field which are tied back to the Marlin tension leg platform.

At 5,500ft below sea level, the project sets a double world record for depth and distance.

BP says the two pumps will enhance production from the field by an average of 20 percent.

Following start-up in 2002, the King field reached peak production in 2004, with recent production averaging 27,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.
