South Korea Tanker Spill Exceeds Estimates

20 December 2007 16:47

Almost 80,000 barrels of oil were spilled from a punctured supertanker off South Korea's western coast earlier this month – about 20 percent more than previous estimates, according to a report by news agency Associated Press (AP).

The Hebei Spirit arrived at a South Korean port this week, eleven days after it was slammed by a crane-carrying vessel, spilling the equivalent of 78,920 barrels of oil into the water, Korean officials announced.

The spill has severely jeopardised the ecosystem and spoiled hundreds of seafood farms in the area, writes AP.
