Shell Tests Iraq Gas Prospects

09 January 2008 14:42

Oil major Shell could take a stake in an Iraqi gas field, the company has announced.

The Iraqi Government has asked Shell to conduct long-term production tests on the Akkas gas field close to the Syrian border, writes Reuters.

Tests results could aid bidding rounds to develop the fields.

French company Total is also rumoured to be vying to develop the fields, according to UK newspaper The Times.

The unstable security situation and uncertain legal framework has so far kept large oil and gas companies from making big investments in the oil- and gas-rich country.
