Maersk Halts Shipping In Nigeria

15 January 2008 14:31

Danish shipping and oil company AP Moller-Maersk says it has suspended all shipping to the Onne port in Nigeria for security reasons.

Onne supplies oil industry contractors and ships near the oil hub of Port Harcourt, where a tanker was attacked on Friday.

"Because of the security situation, no Maersk ship will call into port at Onne before security is demonstrably re-established," a company spokeswoman told Reuters.

Last week's attack follows escalating violence from militants vowing to halt oil exports in a move for greater regional autonomy in the country's main oil-producing area.
