Brazil Makes Giant Gas Discovery

22 January 2008 13:23

A giant natural gas field has been discovered off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, which could match Brazil's giant Tupi oil field in size, Petrobras has told local media.

The Jupiter field is approximately 5,100m below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean and is 37km from Tupi.

Tupi is one of the largest fields discovered in the past 20 years, but could pose problems for exploration as it lays in very deep layers of rock and salt.

Jupiter was discovered by a consortium made up of Petrobras - which has an 80 percent stake in the find - and Portugal's Galp Energies.
