US Pushes for Antitrust Laws on OPEC Producers

21 May 2008

The US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved legislation allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices.

However, the White House has threatened to veto the measure, which would subject OEPC producing countries to the same antitrust laws US companies must follow, writes Reuters.

The legislation also creates a Justice Department task force to aggressively investigate gasoline price gouging and energy market manipulation.

"This bill guarantees that oil prices will reflect supply and demand economic rules, instead of wildly speculative and perhaps illegal activities," Democratic Representative Steve Kagen of Wisconsin, responsible for sponsoring the legislation, told Reuters.

The Senate has previously approved similar legislation as part of a broader energy bill.
