Italian oil and gas company Eni has made a major oil discovery at the Mpungi-1 well, offshore Angola.
The Mpungi-1 well encountered oil pay in the Upper and Middle Miocene sand reservoirs and flowed light oil at rates in excess of 6,000bpd during the production test of the main pool.
Mpungi-1, located 120km off the coast, is the seventh discovery in the area, Eni said.
The well is located in block 15 / 06 in 1,050m of water and was drilled to a total depth of 2,300m.
Eni has a 35% operating interest in block 15 / 06, while Sonangol E&P is the concessionaire.
The other partners include Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção, SSI Fifteen, Total, Falcon Oil Holding Angola, Petrobras International Braspetro and Statoil Angola Block 15 / 06 Award.
