Senegal discoveries

Australian Oil and gas explorer FAR will start the first phase of the evaluation programme of oil discoveries SNE-1 and FAN -1 offshore Senegal, Africa, in the fourth quarter.

The programme will include the drilling of two appraisal wells on SNE-1 and an exploration well to assess its ‘shelf’ prospect.

The FAN-1 discovery will be evaluated further, and a new 3D seismic survey will be conducted over part of the contract area, including a portion of the Sangomar and Rufisque blocks.

The prospect is owned by joint-venture partners FAR, ConocoPhillips, Cairn Energy and Petrosen, with Cairn as the operator.

FAR said that the primary focus of evaluation will be on SNE-1, given its oil accumulation, reservoir properties, and known oil and gas column height.

The development concept outlined by Cairn for SNE field development includes a standalone floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility hub with a potential to integrate nearby discoveries.

"The primary focus of evaluation will be on SNE-1, given its oil accumulation, reservoir properties, and known oil and gas column height."

SNE-1 and FAN-1 were the first exploration wells to be drilled in deep water offshore Senegal. They provided key data to update pre-drill geological models and supported further exploration for more discoveries.

The government was notified about the discoveries in November 2014.

Cairn estimates the minimum economic volume for a tie back development to be around 75 million barrels, within a 25km radius.

As part of the project, FAR has reworked the mapping of the prospects and leads on the shelf following the FAN-1 and SNE-1 discoveries. It has mapped two additional shelf edge prospects (Sirius and Soleil) analogous to SNE, which are now included in the prospect inventory.
