Downer EDI has secured a A$170m ($159m) contract to work on the Gorgon project situated on Barrow Island off the north-west coast of Western Australia.

The 12-month contract, which is for miscellaneous works, includes an option to extend the period.

Under the contract, Downer EDI will work on structural and piping erection, mechanical installations and provide electrical and instrumentation services.

The company will also provide miscellaneous civil works, pre-commissioning works, commissioning and start-up assistance.

Commenting on the contract win, Downer chief executive officer Grant Fenn said he was delighted Downer would be working on one of Australia’s largest resource projects.

Chevron operates the Gorgon project with an approximate 47.3% stake while ExxonMobil and Shell each own 25% stakes.

Osaka Gas holds a 1.25% stake in the project while Tokyo Gas and Chubu Electric Power own 1% and 0.417% interest, respectively.

The project includes the development of the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields, located within the Greater Gorgon area, between 130km and 220km off the north-west coast of Western Australia.

Plans also include a 15.6 million tonne per annum liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to deliver 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia.

The LNG will be off-loaded through a 2.1km long loading jetty for transport to worldwide markets.
