Oil and gas company OMV (Norge) has discovered oil at 7324/8-1 (Wisting) in the Barents Sea after drilling appraisal well 7324/8-3 located within production licence 537.

The well is nearly 2km south of the discovery well 7324/8-1 at water depths of nearly 396m.

The objective of the well was to procure data related to prospective recoverable volumes of oil, perform a water injection test in reservoir rocks in the Stø formation and carry out a seismic monitoring study.

Before drilling of appraisal well 7324/8-3, the Wisting area was estimated to contain between 22 million and 80 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent.

Drilled by the Island Innovator drilling facility, the well encountered an oil column of about 55m in sandstones from the Middle Jurassic to Late Triassic (Stø and Fruholmen formations).

"Before drilling of appraisal well 7324/8-3, the Wisting area was estimated to contain between 22 million and 80 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent."

The Stø formation exhibited good reservoir properties, while the Fruholmen formation has moderate to good reservoir properties.

After evaluating the new well data, the company will provide the resource estimate on the Wisting discovery that will also be crucial for future maturing of the Wisting area for potential development.

Appraisal well 7324/8-3 was spud to a vertical depth of 775m below the sea surface terminating at Fruholmen formation from the Late Triassic Age.

The well is now permanently plugged and abandoned, representing the sixth exploration site in production licence 537.

The licence was awarded in the 20th licensing round in 2009.
