Propulsion control system

Kongsberg Maritime is set to deliver substantial technology packages for ten new pipelaying vessels for Brazil-based Petrobras.

Under the terms of the contracts valued around NOK118m ($20m), Kongsberg will supply its offshore vessel technology including dynamic positioning (DP), position reference systems, propulsion control and automation.

The company will also build six 550t laying tension capacity pipelayers at IHC Merwede in the Netherlands and will deliver them in 2015 and 2016.

Three of the vessels, to be operated by Subsea 7, will feature K-POS DP22 dual redundant DP systems including HiPAP acoustic positioning systems and other position reference systems from Kongsberg Maritime.

The company will also supply its thruster control and vessel management systems, which are 145.9m-long, 29.9m-wide and will engage in transportation and installation of flexible flowlines and umbilicals in water depths up to 3,000m.

Seabras Sapura, the partnership between SapuraKencana and Seadrill, will operate the other three vessels to be built at IHC Merwede.

The contract will also see the company supplying extensive technology packages to four pipelaying support vessels (PLSV) operated under a Technip/DOF joint-venture agreement.

Being built by Vard Promar in Brazil, two of the PLSVs will have a 300t laying tension capacity, while the other two will be built by Vard Tulcea in Romania and outfitted at Vard Søviknes in Norway, with laying tension capacity of 650t.

According to Kongsberg, the vessels enable the installation of large diameter flexible pipes in ultra-deepwater environments, such as the Brazilian pre-salt, and their delivery is scheduled for 2016-17.

Kongsberg Maritime sales and marketing regional manager Halvard Foss said: "For the Petrofac project we will deliver one of our largest ‘full picture’ solutions to date, covering complete EIT equipment and engineering services."
