Petronas's first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility PFLNG SATU has successfully produced the first LNG from the Kanowit gasfield in offshore Sarawak, Malaysia.

Moored by Sofec’s external turret in its introductory production, PFLNG SATU achieved this milestone with the introduction of gas from the KAKG-A central processing platform in November.

It is expected that the first commercial offtake will be within the first quarter of this year.

PFLNG SATU possesses LNG production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).

Petronas acting vice-president of LNG assets, development and production Adnan Zainal Abidin was quoted by Oedigital.com as saying: “At 365m-long and with 22 modular systems, PFLNG SATU is an engineering marvel that brings together the liquefaction, production, storage and offloading processes of LNG to the offshore gasfield.

“We have successfully stretched the limits of our abilities with floating LNG technology to maintain our technical edge as a key LNG supplier.”

Currently, the facility is using a 12 leg (3×4) mooring system on the vessel at water depths of 75m.

The system comes with flexible turret design that enables the vessel to be redeployed at additional locations and unlock dispersed gasfields within the Malaysian waters at water depths 70m-200m for up to two decades without using dry locking.

Established in 1972, Sofec has delivered more than 100 mooring systems for FPSO/FSOs and marine terminals worldwide.
