Australian oil and gas exploration and production company Santos has completed the drilling of two development wells on the Wortel gas discovery, within the Sempang production sharing contract, offshore Indonesia.

Jack-up drilling rig COSL Boss was used to drill the Wortel-3 and Wortel-4 wells to a total depth of 2,003m and 2,271m, respectively. The rig will now be moved to drill Oyong-11, an infill horizontal oil production well, which is also located within the Sempang PSC.

Santos’s joint venture partner Cue Energy Resources said that the drilling of the wells has been completed as future gas producers.

The Wortel development also involves the installation of a small wellhead platform and a 10km pipeline to connect Wortel to the nearby Oyong field for sales. The pipeline has already been commissioned and is ready to receive gas.

The jacket will be used for the installation of the topside platform deck, which is scheduled for mid-January. Commissioning of the platform deck will be completed during the fourth week of January, with first gas anticipated by the end of the month.

Santos estimated the Wortel discovery to hold proven plus probable gas reserves of 103.6 billion cubic feet, according to upstreamonline.com.
