Statoil ASA,

Statoil has made an oil discovery in Miocene Yeti prospect, which is located 220 miles south of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM).

Statoil highlighted that the Yeti discovery was made in Walker Ridge (WR) Block 160, which is 11km from the Cascade field and 15km south of the Big Foot field, which is located in more than 5,000ft of water.

"We are analysing data to determine the size of the discovery in order to consider future appraisal options."

Statoil has 50% operating interest in Yeti prospect and its partners Anadarko Petroleum has 37.55% interest, followed by Samson Offshore, which has 12.55% interest in the prospect.

The Norwegian oil company also stated that Yeti was drilled with the sixth-generation semi-submersible Maersk Developer drilling rig.

According to Statoil, it achieved drilling rate of approximately 123m (400ft) per day, making it one of the best of well drilled in Walker Ridge.

Statoil SVP exploration for North America Jez Averty said: "The Yeti discovery expands the proven sub-salt Miocene play further south and west of the Big Foot field.
