UAE-based Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) has awarded a $175m contract to power and automation technology group ABB to upgrade the power generation capacity at its Zirku oil and gas processing facilities in the Gulf.

As part of the contract, ABB will install additional power generation facilities to improve overall energy efficiency and operational flexibility.

At the Upper Zakum field, ZADCO has plans to increase the production rate from the current 550,000bpd to 750,000bopd.

Located 135km north-west of Abu Dhabi, the Zirku Island is considered to be the main industrial base for the processing, storage and export of oil from the fields including Upper Zakum, Umm Al-Dalkh and Satah.

Zirku has advanced oil and gas installations, and processes and exports the company’s oil through cargo ships to the world markets.

ABB will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, commissioning and testing of two gas turbine driven generators, step-up transformers, new high-voltage switchgear, power management system and associated facilities.

Under the contract terms, the company will deliver a new substation to house gas insulated switchgear (GIS) and will also provide waste heat recovery units to use exhaust gas from the new gas turbines for process heating.

Said to be in the design stage at present, the project is scheduled for completion and handover to operations in June 2016.
