North America drives global new-build trunk/transmission crude oil pipeline length additions by 2023

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Crude Oil Pipelines Industry Outlook to 2023 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Crude Oil Pipelines’ indicates that the total length of global crude oil trunk/transmission pipelines length was 387,581.3 km (with start years up to 2023). Transneft Oil System is the longest active crude oil pipeline in the world. It has started operations in 1914 with a length of 52,840.0 km and a design capacity of 3,316.4mmbbl.

Globally, 67 planned and announced crude oil pipelines are expected to start operations by 2023 with a total length of 28,312.5km. North America is expected to witness the start of operations of 29 planned and announced crude oil pipelines with a total length of 14,344km by 2023. The region’s share in the global upcoming crude oil pipeline length is 51%. Liberty Oil is the major upcoming announced crude oil pipeline in the region with a length of 2,172.2km.

Asia is the second highest contributor to the new-build crude oil pipeline length additions globally. In the region. six new-build crude oil pipelines are expected to come on-stream by 2023, of which two are planned pipelines with a total length of 870km and four are early-stage announced projects with a total length of 3,528.2km. Gwadar–Kashgar is the major upcoming announced crude oil pipeline in the region with a length of 2,414km.

Followed by Asia, the Middle East ranks third in terms of contribution to new-build crude oil pipeline length additions globally.  In the Middle East, 11 new—build crude oil pipelines are expected to start operations by 2023, of which nine are planned with a total length of 3,554.8km, and two are early-stage announced projects with a total length of 500km. Basra–Aqaba Oil is the longest upcoming planned crude oil pipeline expected to commence operations in 2023 with a length of 1,700km.
