IT hiring in global oil & gas industry rises 0.5% in June 2021

The global oil & gas industry noticed a 0.5% rise in IT hiring activity in June 2021 over the previous month, led by Exxon Mobil’s 17.01% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.72% when compared with May 2021.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 5.3% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in June 2021, up 0.14% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of June 2021 were 3.45% lower compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 5.03% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 53.9% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in June 2021, an 11.58% an increase over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 16.18% in June 2021, up 4.21% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with an 11.36% share in June 2021, decline of 4.02% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 6.78% share in June 2021 and rise of 6.54% over May 2021.

Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in June 2021

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average an increase of 29.05% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during June 2021 over May 2021.

Exxon Mobil posted 286 IT jobs in June 2021 and registered a rise of 39.51% over the previous month, followed by Reliance Industries with 124 jobs and a 121.43% rise. Royal Dutch Shell with 89 IT jobs and Yara International with 65 jobs, recorded a 2.3% an increase and a 36.27% drop, respectively, while Marathon Petroleum recorded an 81.25% growth with 58 job postings during June 2021.

Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry

Asia-Pacific emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in June 2021 with a 35.87% share, which marked a 14.64% growth over the previous month.

North America stood next with 29.51%, registering a 14.63% month-on-month decline.Europe was the third leading region with a 22.13% share and an 8.45% rise over May 2021.

In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 11.24% and a month-on-month growth of 20.38%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.25%, registering a 22.22% drop over the previous month.
