The global oil & gas industry noticed an 11.3% rise in IT hiring activity in February 2021 over the previous month, led by Exxon Mobil’s 14.86% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The oil & gas industry’s overall hiring activity increased 8.59% when compared with January 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.02% share of the global oil & gas industry’s hiring activity in February 2021, up 0.08% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of February 2021 were 6.33% higher compared with the previous month.
The increase was a result of 11.07% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive oil & gas IT hiring activity
Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 45.06% emerged as the top IT occupation in the oil & gas hiring activity in February 2021, a 24.93% increase over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 14.86% in February 2021, up 27.73% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 14.37% share in February 2021, increase of 6.52% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 10.65% share in February 2021 and rise of 28.24% over January 2021.
Top five oil & gas companies by recruitment activity in February 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average increase of 77.18% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global oil & gas industry during February 2021 over January 2021.
Exxon Mobil posted 152 IT jobs in February 2021 and registered a rise of 53.54% over the previous month, followed by PPG Industries with 66 jobs and a % rise. Royal Dutch Shell with 58 IT jobs and Yara International with 51 jobs, recorded a 100% increase and a 30.77% growth, respectively, while Baker Hughes recorded a 2.56% drop with 38 job postings during February 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in oil & gas industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global oil & gas IT hiring activity in February 2021 with a 33.63% share, which marked a 19.03% growth over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 28.35%, registering an 11.97% month-on-month increase. Europe was the third leading region with a 23.56% share and a 22.34% rise over January 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 11.83% and a month-on-month growth of 63.51%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 2.64%, registering a 12.5% increase over the previous month.
