Managing Sulphidation Corrosion in Carbon Steel with Handheld XRF Devices

Refinery site pipe networks may be at risk of experiencing sulphidation corrosion in situations when high-sulphur crude oil is high-temperature processed at temperatures exceeding 450°F. In hydrogen-free process streams, carbon steel piping with less than 0.1% silicon (Si) can exhibit significant accelerated / non-uniform corrosion. Recent advances in handheld XRF allow direct measurement of Si in carbon steel piping systems at levels below 0.1%, even at elevated pipe temperatures of up to 650°F (343°C).
