North West Shelf Venture is a producing conventional gas field located in shallow water in Australia and is operated by Woodside Energy. The field is located in block WA-28-P, WA-2-L, WA-23-L, WA-1-L, WA-3-L, WA-5-L, WA-16-L, WA-53-L, WA-6-L, WA-4-L, WA-56-L, WA-52-L, WA-57-L, and WA-58-L, with water depth of 419 feet.

Four expansion projects are associated with the North West Shelf Venture conventional gas field, namely Lambert Deep, Greater Western Flank Phase 3, South Goodwin and NWS growth opportunities. The expansion projects are currently in the construction, commissioning and feasibility stage, targeting start-up during 2022 – 2026.

The field is owned by China National Offshore Oil, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, BP, BHP, Chevron, Shell and Woodside Petroleum.


Production from North West Shelf Venture

The North West Shelf Venture conventional gas field recovered 83.27% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production in 2010. The peak production was approximately 156.95 thousand bpd of crude oil and condensate, 445 Mmcfd of natural gas, 30.74 thousand bpd of natural gas liquids and 2,052 Mmcfd of liquid natural gas. Based on economic assumptions, production will continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2048. The field currently accounts for approximately 17% of the country’s daily output.


Remaining recoverable reserves

The field is expected to recover 1,017.69 Mmboe, comprised of 94.18 Mmbbl of crude oil & condensate, 652.48 bcf of natural gas reserves, 4,853.72 bcf of liquid natural gas reserves and 5.81 Mmbbl of natural gas liquid reserves. North West Shelf Venture conventional gas field reserves accounts 0.35% of total remaining reserves of producing conventional gas fields globally.
