Aibel has secured a contract from Statoil to upgrade the Njord Bravo floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel in the Norwegian Sea.

Valued at around Nkr1.3bn ($167.3m), the contract will see Aibel take up upgrading and maintenance of the vessel, as well as installation of equipment on board for reducing emissions to air (VOC facility).

The contract work is expected to begin immediately, with the storage vessel set to arrive at the Haugesund yard in July this year.

Statoil project development head Torger Rød said: “After several good deliveries, Aibel has proven that the company has both the expertise and ability to handle this type of complex projects.”

The fabrication contract was awarded as Statoil gets ready to prepare the storage vessel for extended operation of the Njord and Hyme fields.

The vessel will also be prepared for tie-in of the Bauge and Fenja field developments in the Norwegian Sea.

It is estimated that the project will employ a maximum of around 600 people.

Statoil expects the Njord Bravo to be delivered at the turn of the year 2019-20.

The Njord field commenced production in 1997.

The upgrade works for the platform and the storage vessel will serve for an additional 20 years of operation.

Last month, the company awarded a contract to Kværner’s yard on Stord for upgrading the Njord A platform.

The work currently comprises topside modifications and reinforcement of the top section of the hull.

The field is expected to come on stream in 2020.

Statoil operates the field with a 20% interest, while the remaining stakeholders include DEA Norge, Neptune Energy, Faroe Petroleum and VNG Norge.
