Chevron Australia announced on Tuesday the first domestic deliveries of gas from the Chevron-operated Wheatstone natural gas facility, offshore Western Australia (WA).

The Wheatstone facility, near the coastal town of Onslow, has the capacity to supply 200 terajoules of natural gas per day (TJ/d) and will supply businesses and households in WA with gas through contracts.

Chevron Australia has an operating stake of 64.1% in the Wheatstone project. Other partners include Woodside Energy (13%), Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration (13.4%), Kyushu Electric Power (1.5%) and PE Wheatstone (8%).

Chevron Australia also operates the Gorgon natural gas facility offshore WA, which has been supplying natural gas to the state since 2016.

The two facilities are expected to produce 500TJ/d of domestic gas for the WA market, enough to generate power for 4.3 million households.

Chevron Australia managing director Al Williams said: “Our investment in the Gorgon and Wheatstone natural gas facilities are a major contributor to Australia now being one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers and has enabled the development of a secure domestic gas supply for the state’s industrial, commercial and household users.

“As a reliable and cost-effective way to generate electricity, cleaner-burning natural gas is a vital energy source for current and future energy needs. Importantly for WA, domestic gas will power local jobs, local industry, local communities and provide government revenues for decades to come.”

According to Australia’s Department of Environment and Energy, the high penetration of natural gas in WA’s electrical power generation contributes to the state’s electricity generation having some of Australia’s lowest greenhouse gas emissions intensity, at around 15% below the national average.

Chevron said it is “working to increase the supply of natural gas into Australia and international energy markets to help realise the objective of affordable solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions”.
