Australian LNG operator Woodside has awarded a supply and fabrication contract to engineering firm Civmec. The contract will see construction of the Pluto-Karratha Gas Plant (KGP) interconnector project in Western Australia.

The interconnector project will transport gas from the Australian firm’s Pluto LNG facility to the Pluto-Karratha Gas Plant in the North West Shelf Project. This will be done through a 5km pipeline to be built along the existing Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline corridor.

According to Woodside, the interconnector project would create opportunities for expanding additional capacity at KGP in future, and would also accelerate future developments of Pluto gas reserves, and third-party resources. It is expected to be launched in 2022.

Under the contract, Civmec will conduct structural steel fabrication, piping, and skids located within the Pluto LNG Plant.

In a statement Woodside said the construction of piping and modules is expected to create about 40 local jobs and planned to run for a period of around seven months, starting this year.

Last November, Woodside took a final investment decision (FID) on the pipeline component of the interconnector project and signed contracts with DDG Operations for the construction of the pipeline as well as its ongoing operation and maintenance.

Civmec has previously worked with Woodside on supply and fabrication works for the Pluto LNG and Greater Western Flank Phase 2 projects.

The Pluto LNG project is located 190km north-west of Karratha in WA, in the Northern Carnarvon Basin.

It processes LNG from the Pluto and Xena gas fields, which have total dry gas recoverable reserve volumes of 4.4 trillion cubic feet (tcf) and 0.6 tcf respectively.

Woodside is the operator of the Pluto project, with an operating interest of 90%. Partners in the project include Tokyo Gas and Kansai Electric, which both hold 5% operating interest.

In April last year, Woodside opened a LNG truck loading facility at the Pluto LNG project.
