Italian oil and gas firm Eni has discovered gas after drilling and testing the Merakes East prospect in the East Sepinggan block, offshore Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The Merakes East prospect is situated 33km south-east of Eni’s Jangkrik field and 3km east of the Merakes field.

In order to make the discovery, Eni drilled the well to a depth of 3,400m measured depth (MD) in 1,592m of water depth and found 15m of gas with net sands in two distinct levels of Miocene Age.
Eni in a statement said: “The production test, which was limited by surface facilities, recorded an excellent gas deliverability of the reservoir, and allowed to collect all the necessary data to perform all the studies required for the submission of a field development plan for the commercial exploitation of this new discovery.
“The analysis of test data show that in production configuration the well can deliver 70mmscfd of gas and 1000bbld of associated condensates.”
The latest discovery is in line with Eni’s near-field exploration strategy and is expected to enable the company to maximise synergies among the subsea infrastructures.

Eni recently received approval from the Indonesian Minister of Energy to implement the Merakes Development Project.
The company’s board of directors has also approved the investment plan for the project.
The Merakes Development Project is located in Kutei Basin, offshore East Kalimantan and includes the drilling and construction of subsea wells with a dedicated transportation system in a 1,500m water depth.
The project is linked to the Jangkrik floating production unit (FPU), situated 35km north east of the project site.
