Italian oil and gas company Eni has made a light oil discovery in the 15/06 block offshore Angola.

The discovery was made on the Ndungu exploration prospect through the drilling of the Ndungu-1 new field wildcat (NFW) well, located 2km from the Mpungi field and a few kilometres from Eni’s West Hub facilities. Ndungi-1 NFW was drilled by the Poseidon drillship, reaching a total depth of 4,050m in water depths of 1,076m.

Eni is the operator of Block 15/06, with an operating interest of 36.8421%. Partners in the block include Sonangol (36.8421%) and SSI Fifteen (26.3158%).

Eni estimates that the discovery contains up to 250 million barrels of light oil in place, with further resources upside. Intensive data collection also indicates a production capacity of 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

Due to its close proximity to the Mpungi field and its subsea production system, the Ndungu discovery will be fast-tracked to production. Production will be routed to Eni’s N’goma floating production storage and offloading unit, which the company states will extend the West Hub’s production plateau.

The Ndungu discovery is the fourth commercial discovery in the area since Eni relaunched its Block 15/06 exploration campaign in mid-2018, following the Kalimba, Afoxé and Agogo discoveries. Together these four discoveries are estimated to contain up to 1.4 billion barrels of oil in place, with appraisal phases planned to determine additional upside resources.

In a statement, the company said: “Angola is a strategic country for Eni’s organic growth. Eni has been present in the country since 1980 and currently accounts an equity production of about 150,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

“In Block 15/06 the two oil development projects, West Hub and East Hub, currently produce about 155,000 barrels of oil per day (100%).”
