Italy’s Eni announced a new light oil discovery in Cuica exploration prospect in Block 15/06 offshore Angola.

The oil has been discovered following the drilling of the Cuica-1 NFW well on the Cuica exploration prospect.

The Cuica prospect is located inside the Cabaça Development Area and near the Armada Olombendo floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) at Eni’s East Hub Development Project.

Eni and its partners used the Seadrill-managed Libongos drillship to drill the Cuica-1 NFW well as a deviated well.

Upon reaching a total vertical depth of 4,100m, the well encountered an 80m total column of reservoir of light oil (38°API) in sandstones of Miocene age with good petrophysical properties.

Eni plans to sidetrack updip the discovery well for placing it in an optimal position as a producer well.

The well is expected to have a production capacity of around 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

In a press statement, Eni said: “Cuica is the second significant oil discovery inside the existing Cabaça Development Area and confirms the Block 15/06 Joint Venture’s commitment to leverage the favourable legal framework on additional exploration activities within existing Development Areas, as promoted through the Presidential Legislative Decree No 5/18 of 18 May 2018.”

The well-head location has been placed near the subsea network of the East Hub project to enable expedited tie-in of the Cuica-1 well and its production.

The move is expected to help extend the production plateau of Armada Olombendo FPSO, said the company.

Covering approximately 2,984km², Block 15/06 is located 350km north-west of Luanda and 130km west of Soyo offshore Angola.

Eni operates the block with a 36.8421% stake while other partners include Sonangol P&P (36.8421%) and SSI Fifteen (26.3158%).
