Norwegian oil and gas company Equinor has received regulatory approval from Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to drill a pilot hole in block 34/7 in the North Sea offshore Norway.

The well, named as 34/7-U-26, is located in the 7 Fjell prospect. It is situated in production licence (PL) 089 in a water depth of 142m.

According to the PSA Norway, drilling is expected to last for four days. It will be performed using the Deepsea Atlantic semi-submersible drilling rig.

The Deepsea Atlantic is a sixth generation deepwater and harsh environment semi-submersible rig. The rig facility is capable of operating at water depths of up to 3,000m.

Fully owned by Odfjell Drilling, the rig is equipped with an advanced dual derrick and full conventional mooring spread for operations in water depths of 70m to 500m.

Last week, Equinor secured a permit from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) to drill exploration wells in the northern North Sea offshore Norway.
