Hurricane Energy has achieved first oil from the Lancaster field in the West of Shetlands area offshore UK.

The company, which focuses on recovering hydrocarbons from fractured basement reservoirs, announced that the Aoka Mizu FPSO’s start-up phase completed a 72-hour production test this week. During the test, the two wells achieved and maintained a combined flow of 20,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd).

Hurricane Energy said it plans to gradually increase facilities availability in the first six months of production in order to demonstrate the feasibility of oil production from fractured basement reservoirs.

The Lancaster field is expected to produce 9,000 bopd in the first three months, followed by 13,000 bopd in the subsequent three months. After six months, Hurricane Energy aims to achieve an operating efficiency of 85% by producing 17,000 bopd from the field.

Hurricane chief executive Dr Robert Trice said: “I am delighted to announce that First Oil has been achieved and that the Lancaster field is now on production, beginning the phased development of Hurricane’s considerable resources on the Rona Ridge.

“Lancaster is the UK’s first producing fractured basement field and the fact that Hurricane has delivered this industry milestone on time and within budget is an incredible achievement.”
